Family law is defined as an area of the law that tackles family-related issues and domestic relations including civil unions, domestic partnerships; issues arising during marriage such as spousal abuse, legitimacy, adoption, surrogacy, child abuse, and child abduction; the termination of the relationship and concomitant matters including annulment, alimony, divorce, parental responsibility order and property settlements.
The list is by no means exhaustive of the multitude of issues that go through the family court system. In Australia, and perhaps in many other nations, family courts have the most crowded dockets. Defendants from all social and economic classes are parties within the system.
Family law is such an extensive filed that encompasses each and every aspect of a family. Therefore, it can’t simply be confined within the realm of economic, governmental or social regulations. Family law is one of the more important areas of legal studies, with a number of universities offering various elective courses on the subject while the bar exam tries to raise the standards in terms of testing knowledge and skills in this area of law. Moreover, family law continuous to evolve and adapt to emerging trends in modern society. Even relationships have evolved and newer legal aspects to family law are being systematized in order to cope with the intricacies of modern life.
