Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the shape and tone of the abdomen and potentially the buttocks and thighs. It is frequently sought by men and women who have lost a lot of weight, resulting into excess skin on their abdominal area. It is also commonly performed on women who can’t get their abdomens back to a pre-pregnancy shape despite diet and exercise.
Since a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure, there are certain things that you have to consider. First, you have to identify exactly what your problem is and what you want the procedure to achieve for you. The type of problem you have and why it needs to be addressed will be the basis as to the type of surgery you will have. Tummy tuck can be minimally invasive, leaving only a small scar that can easily be concealed. But there are cases when the abdominal muscles are involved, thus the procedure will be much more invasive.
After the procedure, there may be swelling, bruising and redness. However, you should ask your surgeon what is normal and what you should be concerned about.
Recovery from tummy tuck surgery is often slow, it may take 6-8 weeks for swelling to recede. You will also have to wear a compression garment for at least 2-3 months.
Tummy tuck, regardless of the reason why it is done, can make you feel better about the way you look, and can make you feel better in general. As long as you find an excellent surgeon and do your part to hasten your recovery, the experience should be a positive one.
